Sunrise, Fla. – This weekend, President Joe Biden signed a $1.2 trillion government spending package for fiscal year 2024 that U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25) helped steer through Congress, a measure which keeps our government open and working for all Americans, ensures major community investments, and fortifies America’s economic and national security, all while blocking extremist Republican cuts and policies.

On Friday, Wasserman Schultz voted with a 286-134 House majority to pass the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024, a funding package made up of the second and final six 2024 regular funding bills. These bills cover federal funding of defense, financial services, homeland security, labor, health and human services, education, as well as State Department and foreign operations.

This second funding package includes $637,195 in Community Project Funding (CPF) that the Congresswoman secured for Florida’s 25th District, funding which responds directly to Dania Beach’s safety needs. When added to the other major spending bill packages approved this month, the Congresswoman utilized her senior Appropriations Committee experience to deliver more than $16 million in CPFs overall to address community needs in 2024.

“I am pleased to vote for $637,195 in community project funds for Dania Beach in this bill, which combined with the other local funds just like it from the earlier 2024 spending measure, will have a profound impact on Florida’s 25th District,” Wasserman Schultz said. “These local and federal investments create jobs and make a real difference in the lives of so many in Broward County. I am so proud to have fought for funding that will make our community and nation healthier, safer, and stronger. This is the kind of help all Americans and my community need as we face higher costs, attacks on our freedoms, and challenges like climate change and neighborhood safety.”

The two spending bill packages reflect not only $16 million in targeted CPF funding for vital Broward County projects, but also include many larger policy and funding victories that the Congresswoman championed, including:

§  Fully funds Everglades restoration at $425 million, ensuring the EAA Reservoir project moves ahead.

§  Blocked numerous Republican efforts to erode women’s reproductive access.

§  Restored military construction funding to $2 billion above the budget request.

§  Dedicated resiliency and PFAS environmental remediation funding for our shuttered military bases, and boosted Department of Defense housing oversight funds.

§  $121 billion for VA medical care, including increased and protected funding for gender-specific care for women.

§  Blocked Republicans from further restrictions on veteran and military abortion access and counseling.

§  Provision included to end harmful VA animal research within 2 years.

As for CPFs, Wasserman Schultz championed funding for a project in this second package of funding bills that will directly benefit Florida’s 25th District residents:

§  $637,195 for City of Dania Beach Emergency Operations Center

This community investment follows previously announced projects included in the first government funding package, where Wasserman Schultz secured $15.4 million in Community Project Funding for a wide range of projects that included:

§  $963,000 for Advanced Materials Engineering Research Institute-Semiconductor Fabrication

§  $850,000 for Broward College: Aviation Training Center Remodel and Expansion

§  $850,000 for Broward County: Port Everglades Shore Power Systems Infrastructure Project

§  $850,000 for Broward MPO: SR-5/US-1 South Bound On Ramp To West Bound I-595

§  $959,757 for City of Cooper City for Gravity Sewer Line Rehabilitation / Inflow and Infiltration Correction Project

§  $959,757 for City of Hallandale Beach for Water Main Rehabilitation Project: NE 7th Street

§  $959,757 for City of Miramar for Water Main Infrastructure Improvements

§  $963,000 for Deployment of Hybrid Artificial Reefs to Protect Shorelines from Coastal Flooding

§  $963,000 for Detecting Early Disease in Different Ethnicities through Standardization of Environmentally Induced Genetic Changes

§  $525,000 for Digital Forensics Unit Expansion for Enhanced Human Trafficking Intelligence

§  $500,000 for Hollywood Beach Phase IV East/West Street Raising and Flood Management Project

§  $4,000,000 for Sheridan Bridge Repair

§  $959,757 for Town of Davie for Drainage Project

§  $1,116,279 for United Way of Broward County:  Veterans United for Housing

Wasserman Schultz was also able to secure notable recurring program wins in the 2024 fiscal year spending bills, with $6.96 million in funding for breast cancer awareness efforts for young women, which springs from her EARLY Act legislation, as well as continuing to protect women’s access to free annual mammograms beginning at age 40.

She also secured $4 million for drowning prevention efforts, with $2 million of it for the Centers for Disease Controls to scale up prevention programs and begin implementing a national water safety plan, and $2 million for localized grants created by her Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act, which assists states, local government, and Indian tribes for education, training, and enforcement of pool safety requirements.

The Congresswoman also secured $8.5 million for holocaust survivors’ assistance, as well as $10 million for the Alcee L. Hastings Program for Advanced Cancer Screening in Underserved Communities, which she created in 2021 to increase equitable access to cancer screening in underserved communities.

In addition, in the first round of spending bills, Wasserman Schultz and House Democrats were successful in removing extreme House Republican policies from these bills that attempted to make abortion illegal everywhere, slash efforts to fight climate change, and threatened our national security. Instead, these final bipartisan 2024 funding bills will help keep our communities safe, lower costs, and move America forward. Taken together, the funding for Florida’s 25th District and the funding increases for critical government programs will continue to grow our local economy and support our communities.
